The first step to organizing any room is to remove the clutter.

Remove anything that belongs in another room in the house. Put those
items where they belong.

Helpful Tip: If you have a pile of magazines that you were saving for

*1. Baking Soda*
Mix it with water to create a paste to wash walls or other surfaces
that smell, or leave an open box in enclosed spaces that are odorous,
such as the bottom of the laundry bin or garbage can.

*2. Borax*
Just as useful as baking soda, but more concentrated. Dump 2 teaspoons
in the garbage disposal, wipe down smelly surfaces with a mix of 1⁄2
teaspoon of borax and a cup of warm water, or spray the mixture on
plants to kill bugs and mold (and not the plant).

*3. Vinegar*
White vinegar and water, mixed in equal parts, sanitizes. And that
vinegar smell disappears as soon as it dries. Try the mixture in
coffeemakers, as well as on any non-stone surface around the house.

Create centers of activity and store related utensils near where they
will be used. Here are some common centers of activity, in the order
that food will travel through the kitchen:

*Storage or pantry*. Consider your freezer an extension of this area.
Whether you store foods in a true pantry, a cabinet, a closet, or
someplace else entirely, don't forget to go through periodically and
clear out items that are hopelessly old or will never be used.
Preparation. Cutting board, knives, measuring cups and spoons, and
mixing bowls all go here.
Cooking. The stove and oven plus the utensils that go with them. This
area should include pots and pans, pot holders, spoons and spatulas (a
utensil jar works well for these).
Baking. If you love to bake, you might find it handy to store your
flour, sugar, baking powder, a set of measuring cups and spoons, your
favorite mixing bowl, etc. together in one convenient spot.
Serving. The table, plus tableware, serving dishes, napkins, trivets,
and anything else you need to sit down and eat. Soy sauce? Salt and

messy your house is.

bedrooms. Toss out and keep. This will take you the rest of the day.

The most important part of the day is to clean and declutter. Remember
the main reason the house is messy is because you saved too much
stuff. So please don't feel obligated to save. Don't touch the
paperwork such as bank statements, bills yet, just put them in a large
plastic bin. You will sort them out later on.

Too much stuff

or if you can't even remember what it does, it is time to get rid
of it. Look at every pot, pan, dish and utensil in that kitchen and
make a note of when you used it last. You need to get rid of it if it
is not something that you use frequently. The only exception to this
is anything that you use seasonally.

The other important thing that you need to look at as you do your
kitchen organization is all of your canned goods, spices and packaged
foods. This is an important kitchen organization tip because if it is
expired, you need to throw it away. If you do not use it or like it,
throw it away or donate it to your local food shelf. This is
especially true of spices. We tend to gather and collect spices that
we never use.

Counter space is not storage space

time to get yourself organized.  Most people find this a daunting
task and it can be. But if you follow these ten tips, you can make a
significant dent in your disorganized office, home or life.

* Unclutter. Whether it be your office or your home, get
yourself three containers. Label one _must keep_, label one
_junk_ and label the third _donate_. Throw away the junk and
give away the donate bins.  Start small- perhaps with your desk
or one cabinet and work up to your entire office or home. By
getting rid of the things you never use, you make it easier
to find what you need, have space to put the things you keep
away, and do a good deed by donating to others.

* Make a to-do list.  Noone can remember everything. If you
need to get things done, write them down, preferably in order of
priority. When you have the list, look for ways to
consolidate similar activities and same even more time. (For
example, you can listen to a book on tape while you vacuum
or you can drop something at the cleaners while you are on
that side of town doing your shopping). This applies to work as
well. By prioritizing your to-do list you will be more
efficient. And NEVER let your email become your to-do list.

* Delegate. You can't do everything yourself. Give *specific*
tasks to every member of your staff or your family, even your
little ones. In fact, telling a 3 year old to put his toys
in a box is more effective than saying clean up your toys.
(And by uncluttering, the box has room for his toys.) As your
children get older, give them more responsibility. (My teenage
daughters did the laundry- it was their job and they handled
it from hamper to washer to dryer to folding and returning
to the right room). Most people are effective delegators at
work but neglect to bring this talent home.

* Maintain one calendar that the entire family can access so
everyone knows who has to be driven or picked up where, and when
they need to leave to get it done. If you and your spouse have
secretaries at work give them a copy to incorporate into the
personal section of your work calendar. If possible, create
this calendar together so conflicts can be identified early
enough to juggle schedules. Review it once a week or once a
month together, or whatever timing makes sense.

* Follow the . (I am a scientist, sorry). This law states that
the disorder or entropy of the universe is always
increasing. To reduce disorder takes energy and the more
disordered a system, the more energy it takes to bring the system
back to order. If you do a little cleaning every day, a
little organizing, a little uncluttering or a little of
whatever chore needs to be done, the tasks never get that
big. If you leave it for several days, it will take more
time and be a bigger annoyance to do.  For example, I always
clean as I cook. Then when I am done, there is very little to
clean up. I get it done while items are baking or heating up
and it saves me time and aggravation.

* Put things where you use them. If you have to make
children's lunches, keep the lunch boxes and containers in the
kitchen near the preparation counter.  Keep extra diapers
in the car. Keep coats and boots near the exit/entrance door
you use (if you have no closet, get a clothes tree and a
plastic boot tray). Keep car keys on a hook near the exit door.

* Keep a pad and pencil by your bed. That way when something
occurs to you that needs attention, you can write it down and
deal with it in the morning. Otherwise you will either worry
about it all night or forget it.

* Prepare ahead. Put your children's clothes out the night
before, make lunches the night before,and do any tasks that will
make your morning easier. Prepare twice a recipe and freeze half.
(I have to admit, I rarely do this but it's a good idea). When
I am cooking for company, I always look for recipes I can prepare
ahead, freeze and then bake/warm the day of the dinner. Pack for
a trip by laying out the clothes and items a day or so before
(and make a list of what to pack). That way you don't forget
anything. Bring the list with you to make sure you didn't leave
anything at the hotel.

* Do whatever you can online. Paying bills, grocery shopping
or personal shopping takes less time on line and is often
cheaper.

* Outsource what makes sense. Have someone clean your house,
mow the lawn, plow the snow or whatever tasks are overwhelming
or unpredictable. That way you know they will be done. Buy
prepared meals when you know you will be late or everyone
will be eating at different times.

These ten tips were my way of coping with a hectic family life and a
demanding work schedule. The more I practiced them, the less stressed
I felt, and the more things fell into place. When you unclutter your
space and your life you will enjoy everything more

Organizing Your Home: The Family Room

If your home is like many today, you not only have what is called a
front room; you also have a family room. It is also possible that
it is referred to as a great room because it often connects the
kitchen area as part of the room. Whichever applies, when it is
messy, it won't be as attractive and nobody will want to use the
space for any family-related activities. So, let's do something
about that, shall we?

Let's begin by doing a once over walk-through as if you were a
visitor.

Take your time and observe any clutter. If you see the clutter, it
is likely your family members and guests do as well. To make this
room inviting, we're going to reduce the number of *things* in this
room and make it more homey.

Clutter can consist of many things often overlooked as simply 'the
way it is'. Even if it is magazines or newspapers laying about, or
several pairs of shoes here and there, it can add up to a large
amount of clutter. Once again as has been recommended in, grab some
laundry baskets or boxes and begin placing all items that don't
belong in the family room into them.

The idea is to then take these things to the areas of the house that
they belong, in order to make your de-cluttering that much easier.

If you're not going to have time to read those magazines or
newspapers, get rid of them by taking them to the recycling center in
your area. Why hold on to them if you're not going to read them,
right? Take all the toys in the basket to their owners' rooms and
have them place them where they belong (in an organized manner, of
course!). Shoes should be returned to the room where their wearer
lives.

Now that you've delivered the baskets or boxes to the appropriate
locations, go back and continue to look at this room as a visitor sees
it. You should see a marked improvement, but you're not done yet!

The next to do on your list is to tackle the furniture. If you
witness fingerprints and dust deep enough to write a ransom note in,
it is time to get out the dust cloth! However, if you can't even
see the top of your furniture, you will need to take care of the flat
surfaces first by removing all papers, etc. The fact is that flat
surfaces collect papers, no matter what the surface is: tabletops,
armoires, desks, or floors. Once you have removed all unnecessary
items from all flat surfaces, you'll be more likely to keep them
clear later. Once your flat surfaces are clear, give them a once-over
with a furniture polish (if appropriate) or glass cleaner (if
appropriate).

Next on the list is to run the vacuum—don't worry about getting
the edges and moving furniture—just vacuum the places you can get
easily. Chances are if you can't reach the areas easily, no one
has been able to deposit large amounts of dirt or tracks back there,
either.

Let's now turn our attention to the TV set. Can you see your TV
through the dust and fingerprints? If not, give it a once-over with
the rag and some glass cleaner and do the same with your stereo
cabinet.

One last area to inspect: all the corners of the room. Are there any
cobwebs in the corners? If so, grab a feather duster and knock
'em down.

You have successfully tackled your family room and it is ready for
family and visitors to admire. Congratulations! Now purpose to
keep it that way, okay? It was a lot of hard work but, if you stay
on top of the clutter, it will be much easier to maintain in the
future.

And, don't hesitate to enlist the family's support by encouraging
them to pick up after themselves!
