Getting organized for the new year

Getting organized for the new year

[1]I keep a ridiculous number of lists: movies I want to see, books I
want to read, groceries I need to buy, recipes I want to try, things
I have to do, letters I should write, gifts I wish to give, music I
want to have my son hear, my lofty someday goals. These lists are
handwritten --- I tried to keep them digitally but kept writing
things down on sticky notes and then sticking the notes to my iPhone.
A key component of being organized is knowing yourself, and I'm a
handwritten list maker.

At the start of every year, I get a new notebook [2] and copy the
lists from the old notebook into the new. I grab a big cup of coffee,
light a fire in the fireplace, and curl up under a warm blanket with
the notebook and a good pen. I recopy the lists for a few reasons:

* My notebook gets beaten up during the year and I'm ready for a new
notebook every 12 months.

* The copying process is a tradition I really enjoy.

* When going through the lists, I can change my preferences, reorder
my lists, and eliminate things I did/saw/tried that I forgot to
cross off over the course of the year.

* The old lists become recordings of my life over the past year.
Since I don't keep a diary, this is the closest thing I have.

Obviously, the lists also help keep me organized.

What traditions do you complete at the end of the year or start of the
new year that help to keep you organized? How do you enjoy these
traditions? Do you keep lists? Share your organizing traditions in the
comments.

Sitter information forms

When you leave your home, you may have a babysitter, pet-sitter, or
house-sitter watch over your children, pets, or things. Completing an
information sheet with important contact and vital data can keep you
and the sitter organized and ready for anything.

You can print and fill out these forms exactly as they are, or use
them as inspiration for creating your own.

Five stress-reducing strategies for the holidays

Five stress-reducing strategies for the holidays

December is one of the most stressful times of year. If you don't
watch out, you could end up crying and in a terrible mess of anxiety.
Here are five things you can do now to reduce the clutter and stress
at the holidays:

* *Make a list.* Whether it's a grocery list, gift shopping list, or
list of things you need to do --- write it down. Once it's out of
your head and onto a sheet of paper, you'll stop cluttering up
your mind with the items and stressing out about trying to
remember it all.

* *Check it twice ...* or as often as you need. Once you've made
your lists, be sure to review them and/or bring them along with
you. A list isn't good to you if you don't have it when you need
it, where you need it. A to-do list should be reviewed regularly,
until all items are completed.

* *Find out what's naughty.* Walk around your home and/or office
with a laundry basket or box and pick up any items that are out of
place, and then put them away. Do you have a used glass on your
desk that should be returned to the kitchen? Do you have shoes in
the middle of the living room floor that belong in your closet?
Reduce the stress caused by visual clutter by putting everything
back in its place.

* *Find out what's nice.* Take time each day to enjoy some down
time. If you meditate, meditate. If you do yoga, do yoga. If you
simply want to sit and drink your coffee in silence for 10 or 15
minutes, do that. Give your brain some much needed time off each
day during this busy season.

* *Get ready to travel out of town.* If you're traveling or even if
you're staying put, now is the time to confirm all of your
reservations --- travel, hotel, dinner, movie --- or those of your
guests. The less you leave up in the air, the less you'll worry
about your plans between now and then. RSVP to parties, find out
what you're supposed to bring to holiday dinners, or even learn
which friends are coming into town you'll want to see while
they're visiting their relatives. Get everything on the calendar
and be ready for as much as you can.

2009 Gift Giving Guide: Gifts for kids [1]
In our seventh installment of Unclutterer's 2009 Holiday Gift Giving
Guide [2] we're discussing gifts for children. Unitasker Wednesday:
USB Pet Rock [3]
The wonderful people at ThinkGeek.com have brought us what can only be
described as THE most amazing unitasker ever found. Not only does it
waste energy and use up one of your USB ports, but it also does
absolutely nothing! The USB Pet Rock [4]. An author's minimalist home
of the future [5]
In 1952, _Popular Mechanics_ magazine ran an article about science
fiction author
Robert Heinlein [6]'s then-new 1,150-square-foot minimalist home.
Titled "A House To Make Life Easy [7]," the article written by Thomas
E. Stimson, Jr., explores the "house that's called extreme today but
may become conventional before the 20th century has run its course."
2009 Gift Giving Guide: Gifts the Unclutterers are giving [8]
In our eighth installment of Unclutterer's 2009 Holiday Gift Giving
Guide [9] we're discussing gifts the Unclutterer team members are
giving this holiday season.

Holiday season perfect time to sell or donate items

Holiday season perfect time to sell or donate items

Does your son have a Thomas Train set he ignores? Is your daughter's
Radio Flyer wagon gathering dust in the garage? Are you storing golf
clubs you never use? Do you have a formal gown you wore once and don't
plan to wear again?

All of these lightly used items --- and thousands of others --- are in
high demand on Craigslist and eBay right now. Buyers are looking to
save a few dollars, and sellers are hoping to make a little money.
With the economy sloshing around in stagnant water, there is increased
activity on resale sites during the holiday season.

If you're interested in selling your things on Craigslist [1] or eBay
[2], I highly recommend checking out the extremely thorough article
"Sell It Now --- how to make hundreds of dollars in 37 minutes [3]" by
Ramit Sethi. The article is targeted toward eBay, but works just as
well for Craigslist. It's especially helpful if you haven't ever sold
anything on a site like this.

If you aren't interested in taking the time and energy to sell your
lightly used items, now is also a great time to donate them to
charity. Remember, charities aren't dumping grounds for used stuff, so
only consider donating goods that are still in excellent condition.
Also, give your local charity a call before making a donation to
confirm they have a need for your specific items.

Declutter your closet: what to donate

Declutter your closet: what to donate

Decluttering an overcrowded closet can be fun. That is to say, if you
have determined to let things go. It's easier to say than done if
you're not used to making donations and throwing things out. It can be
very difficult to decide to which ones to donate and which ones to
keep. First of all, you have to come to a point that you must throw
things out, otherwise no closet organizer can help. It's true that a
closet organizer can help, but it you have too much stuff, it just
simply won't work.

If you have clothes that you bought in the 80s at yard sales, it's
definitely time to start making donations. Most people wear 20% of
their clothes 80% of the time, so there's simply no need to keep them
all just in case. That in case probably will never happen. First find
the clothes that you wear often put them aside. Then go through the
closet and throw out anything that you haven't wore in recent 2 years
or anything that doesn't fit you. If you're sentimental about certain
piece, then save one or two and put them in the attic or cellar. Then
take the thrown out pile and donate them.

Workspace of the Week: Home office haven

Workspace of the Week: Home office haven

This week's Workspace of the Week is Mandi's office, her way [1]:

[2]

The first thing that jumped out at me in Mandi's office is the
wonderful cable control. A simple cable tube [3] groups all the cables
together and reduces their visual clutter. I also like how she uses
matching frames, all along one shelf, to group photographs. The coffee
station located where she uses it --- in her office --- is also a
great idea.

In the comment section to Mandi's office image, she linked to her
website, so I followed the link. On her site I found a wonderful page
of free downloadable Christmas planning worksheets [4]. If you
celebrate Christmas, you should definitely check out the planning
worksheets to help reduce the stress of the holiday.

Thank you, Mandi, for submitting your inspiring office to our Flickr
pool.

Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week?

because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don't
forget that workspaces aren't just desks. If you're a cook, it's
a kitchen; if you're a carpenter, it's your workbench.

Use a browser extension to limit the number of open windows and tabs

Use a browser extension to limit the number of open windows and tabs

Browser tabs and windows have a nasty habit of multiplying. It's easy
to find yourself with a half-dozen browser windows open, each one
having several tabs active. As you might expect, this has a serious
effect on general system performance and stability.

To mitigate this particular problem, I use a Firefox add-on called
Window and Tab Limiter [1]. It allows you to set a limit on the number
of windows and tabs Firefox will keep open. Depending on the mode that
is selected in the add-on's preference window, one of the following
three things will happen when the user exceeds their own specified
maximum number of open widows and tabs:

* *Suggestion Mode:* The user is presented with a list of active
windows and tabs. They can then either select one or more windows
or tabs to close, or simply ignore the warning and continue
working.

* *Force Mode:* The user is presented with a list of active windows
and tabs. They must close at least one window from the list to
remain under the limit so they can continue working.

* *Silent Mode:* Windows are closed automatically without any user
interaction.

Although the Silent Mode option may sound dangerously automatic, I
find it works quite well, provided the window and tab limit is not set
too low. (I keep mine set at 7.)

If you use Chrome, you might want to try No More Tabs [2]. It has
fewer options, but it provides the same basic functionality.

Workspace of the Week: Ikea hacked

Workspace of the Week: Ikea hacked

This week's Workspace of the Week is Thomas' office in Germany [1]:

[2]

After learning in the comments to our Unitasker Wednesday post [3]
that German's grow asparagus with skins so hearty they need to be
peeled (who knew?!!), I thought it only appropriate that today's
Workspace of the Week continue on this German theme.

Thomas' desk is a simple Ikea product with Ikea attachments (he
repurposed two large Blecka [4] hooks to make an amazing laptop stand
[5] and a set of Ekby Bjarnum [6] shelf brackets for the hanging
folders). Instead of giving up valuable desktop space for his monitor,
he mounted it straight to the wall behind the desk. In the full photo
set [7] you can see that he has hidden his printer and office supplies
in a hacked cupboard made out of Ikea supplies for less than $35.
Thank you, Thomas, for submitting your ingenious, inexpensive,
uncluttered office to our Flickr pool.

Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week?

Assorted links for October 18, 2010

Assorted links for October 18, 2010

Interesting articles relating to uncluttering, organizing, and simple
living:

* Patrick at Minimal Mac asks "A Most Important Question [1]." If
you don't know where something belongs, it may "... not have a
place in your home, in your relationships, in your job, or or in
your life," and, "perhaps it should not be there."

* Alton Brown, the celebrity chef who is the inspiration behind our
Unitasker Wednesday posts, wrote a diary about his (bizarre?)
minimalist eating practices when he travels in last week's _New
York_ magazine: "Alton Brown Makes His Own Avocado Ice Cream, Does
Shots With John Hodgman [2]."

* Learning Express Library [3] is an online resource for practice
tests on hundreds of topics. The free and digital tests range from
the U.S. Citizenship exam to college entrance tests. Save your
money and some trees with these helpful resources.

* Lose the equipment and your gym membership, and get an uncluttered
workout using only your body weight. From Nerd Fitness, "Beginner
Body Weight Workout [4]."

* The Art of Manliness has a tribute to all things minimalist in "Go
Small Or Go Home: In Praise of Minimalism [5]."

* Clean up your iTunes digital music collection with Tagalicious [6]
--- a simple and easy to use application that gets rid of all of
those "Track 01'' files you have in your directory.

* Are you on Twitter [7]? Does it bother you when someone attends a
conference and floods your stream with messages that clutter up
your feed? Use DeClutter [8] to remove specific keywords from your
timeline. (_via Swiss-Miss [9]_)

Pack rats illustrated in comic books

Pack rats illustrated in comic books

The website Comics Alliance [1], as its name suggests, covers comic
books and all things related to the comic book industry. Reader Haley
called our attention to the site to check out the post "Super-Hero
Hoarders. The 7 Biggest Pack-Rats In Comics [2]."

Art often mimics life, so it's not surprising that fictional
characters struggle with clutter the same as everyone else. I really
liked #4, Rick Jones' illustrated mess. From the article [3]:

[4]

| At first glance, it's pretty easy to call Rick Jones out for
| hoarding super-hero contacts. Over the course of his existence in
| the Marvel Universe, he's sidekicked for the Hulk, Captain Marvel,
| Captain America, ROM: Spaceknight and the entire Avengers team,
| and been singled out as the bearer of the Destiny Force, which was
| so complicated that even Curt and Chris [5] won't touch it. In
| reality, though --- or at least, in one reality --- Rick's a
| straight up legitimate hoarder: In the alternate universe of
| "Future Imperfect," the Hulk ends up killing all of the other
| super-heroes and super-villains, leaving Rick to amass a pretty
| hefty collection of memorabilia

Check out the full article [6] to learn who took the top spot.

Insulation might look like cotton candy, but it's a little more
practical. It's great for keeping your house warm, but some say it's

Interior Design Ideas For A Beautiful Bedroom

Interior Design Ideas For A Beautiful Bedroom

The bedroom is in some ways the most important room in the house. It
is the sanctuary away from the troubles of the world, the ultimate
escape from day to day life. Behind closed doors in the bedroom,
problems can be forgotten. To create a setting for restful slumber,
think about what colors and styles produce the greatest happiness and
peace of mind. In your bedroom, you can have the off the wall
decorations you've always wanted. The bedroom is private, so the
interior design of your bedroom is all about you.

Your bedroom does more than just serve the need for a place to sleep.
It accommodates you at all times of day, providing space for reading,
studying, watching TV, talking on the phone, eating, and using the
computer. Because of this, the bed is no longer the primary piece of
furniture in the bedroom. Bedroom desks, large nightstands, or a
television might be a better focus for your bedroom interior design.
If you watch a lot of television in your bedroom, you might want to
consider a chair and ottoman for more comfortable viewing.

If you like to read in your bedroom, you should pay special attention
to the lighting in your bedroom. Dim, moody lighting may be restful,
but it will cause eye strain when reading. The lighting should be at
a level where you do not accidentally shade it, and tall enough to
shine light on the book or magazine. Bedroom interior design
professionals suggest that when using lamps in the bedroom, the lower
edge of the lamp shade should be around eye level when seated.

Remember to choose colors that you find restful when decorating your
bedroom. Exciting colors such as red should be avoided unless you
personally find them comforting. Strong colors have been said to
promote insomnia. Designing your bedroom interior with a splash of a
bright color will liven up a room, but it should not be allowed to
dominate.

Layered curtains in the bedroom are and excellent interior design
choice. This allows you to wake up to filtered light, open the
curtains for full light, or black out the room for naps and sleeping
in. Blackout lined draperies will protect you from morning sun,
whereas sheers or thin blinds will filter light for a gentle glow in
the morning. Bedroom interior design has many options, and can be
tailored to your personal preferences. The bedroom should be your
sanctuary, and it is important to feel comforted and restful when you
are there.

The Importance Of Lighting In Interior Design

The Importance Of Lighting In Interior Design

How you light your house is an important part of redecorating. A
change in the lighting can change how the room is viewed. Lighting
interior design contributes greatly to the look and feel of a room.
There are many types of lighting which can be used in various rooms.
We are no longer restricted to a few lamps around the room.

Ambient lighting is a hidden light source that washes the room with a
glow. This creates very few shadows and tends to flatten a room.
Japanese paper lanterns and wall sconces both produce ambient
lighting. For temporary ambient effects, use a dimmer with your
ordinary lighting.

Accent lighting provides interest to a room. This method of lighting
interior design highlights and object or architectural feature. To
use accent lighting, you only need a bulb and a shield to direct the
light to the desired focus. Halogen spotlights and opaquely shaded
table lamps both provide accent lighting.

Another kind of lighting used in interior design is task lighting.
This is a more practical lighting strategy, highlighting an area for
daily activities such as reading, cooking, and sewing. Effective task
lighting prevents eyes strain and helps with the performance of vital
activities. The kitchen is a particularly good place to incorporate
task lighting in your interior design. Task lighting sources should
be unobtrusive and shielded to prevent glare. Task lighting can be
effectively combined with accent lighting to produce lovely effects.

Some lighting can be a work of art in and of itself. Aesthetic
lighting is purely decorative, such as a neon sculpture or a spotlight
illuminating a statue or painting. This type of lighting must not be
used alone, but accompanied by other lighting strategies in your
interior design.

Of course, no survey of lighting interior design would be complete
without a mention of natural light. Rooms can be arranged to take
advantage of the position of the sun at different times of day. This
type of lighting is also called kinetic lighting because the light
from outside moves. It is one of the less reliable types, as it is
affected by the seasons and the weather, but natural lighting can
produce an effect unequaled by any artificial light source when used
properly.

Lighting is an important tool in your design collection. The way you
do your lighting interior design affects the perception of any room.
Lighting is also versatile. Using several strategies at once in a
room allows you to turn any of them off, changing the look and feel
with the flick of a switch. This can be effective for creating
different moods in different rooms at night.

Consult Interior Designer For Flooring

Consult Interior Designer For Flooring

When you've bought a new home or are having one made, you are going to
have to decide what type of flooring you want in it. You will choose
from wood, ceramic tile or hardwood and you will also choose the color
and style. If you know the colors you want your house painted in and
the style you want it decorated in, it will be best to match your
flooring accordingly. But, if you aren't sure yet, choose neutral
flooring that will accommodate any style and color.

Choosing your flooring is a big decision because it can make or break
your house. If you're afraid of making this decision on your own,
hire a professional. An interior designer will gladly help you decide
what is right for you and your home by finding out your individual
likes and dislikes.

You can find an interior designer for your flooring needs in just
about any city world wide. If you don't know of one on your own, then
ask for a recommendation from someone you know or look for one in the
phone book. You will be able to tell if the interior designer has the
same vision that you do or not.

Once you've decided on the flooring, you can keep the interior
designer around or you can do the rest on your own. You will know
right away if you still need the help of a professional or not by how
hard it is for you. Those without an eye for design should consult an
interior designer if they want their house to look beautifully
decorated. Some people do have a natural talent for decorating and
won't need any help at all. It all depends on your personality and
what you're good at. So, if you know what type of flooring, drapes,
colors and furniture go best together, you should save yourself the
money and do it all on your own!

Interior Design In The Bedroom – Great New Look On A Budget

Interior Design In The Bedroom – Great New Look On A Budget

Today's modern bedroom is often regarded as a multi-purpose room
rather than what it was once was used for - just sleeping. These days
many people have added couches and use the room as a hideaway where
they can watch television, listen to music or read a good book.

Changes that you have planned for the room may well impact on its
current setup and it could affect your sleeping patterns. It is
therefore very important that any interior design bedroom projects
should be well thought out because even something as simple as
relocating a bed or changing the way the bed faces can potentially
cause many sleepless nights and problems down the track.

A bedroom interior design project can be something as simple as just
changing the look of what is already in the room. Similar to the work
you can do in a bathroom where a new shower curtain and fresh window
curtains can change the look of the room markedly. The same effect can
be created with a bedroom; a new set of bed sheets and duvet cover,
some new cushions and pillows and maybe some new drapes and you
instantly have the makings of a total new look. Obviously these types
of cosmetic changes are not major interior design bedroom projects but
they can certainly help make an impact and make the room begin to look
terrific without having to outlay a lot of money.

Take Care When Choosing Your Color Scheme

When you begin to plan your interior design bedroom project you may
want to redecorate and change the color scheme to more hip and soft
colors. Remember the primary purpose of the room is for you to enjoy
good sleep and this can often be difficult if you choose vivid or
bright colors as part of your decorations. Many paint manufacturers
have developed massive color ranges for you to select from, often they
might have up to 10 or more different shades for the same color. So
head down to your local paint retailer and see what they have on
offer.

If you are not really too sure as to what color scheme you should go
with in your bedroom then it could be helpful to visit one of the
display home villages near you for a little inspiration - this way you
can check out the latest trends and see which colors are popular.
Going online and browsing interior design websites may also give you
the insight into what options you have available.

Don't forget that once you have short listed a few colors then it is
a good idea to get small samples of each color and trial them on the
bedroom walls to see if you can come up with a great scheme. Do this
before you actually have to purchase the required quantities as it is
never easy trying to return paint if it does not suit your room.

A simple interior design bedroom project, such as repainting and
implementing a few effective cosmetic changes, can be a great way of
making an impact on your home features. With a little forward planning
you can make a dramatic change to the room without impacting too much
on your wallet. Most people spend a great deal of time in their
bedroom so just be certain that the changes you make in your bedroom
are really changes you can live with - remember that your bedroom can
also be your sanctuary.

Traits And Tasks Of Interior Designers

Traits And Tasks Of Interior Designers

The career of an interior designer combines creativity with business
expertise and people skills. The traits of successful designers are
varied and include:
·Attentive to colors, textures, materials, lighting and layouts in
various settings.
·Enjoy designing or remodeling their own and other's environments.
·Are creative and artistic.
·Have the ability to sell.
·Can organize details.
·Communicate and work well with clients and other design
professionals.
·Create spaces that are functional, visually appealing, safe and meet
all the desired requirements.
·Can clearly identify the purpose and functions of various spaces.
·Understand the client's vision for esthetic qualities, the look and
feel, of projects.
·Do research and keep current on latest trends, materials and
products.
·Are problem solvers.
·Have ability to analyze designs and plan spaces.
·Possess expertise in interior construction, materials, furniture,
equipment and local building codes to help coordinate projects.
·Can read architectural blueprints and create their own drawings.
·Fit together artistic, functional and technical requirements.

Some specific tasks designers become involved with are choosing,
negotiating with, scheduling and overseeing installers, invoicing
clients, paying for necessary materials and furnishings and making
sure codes are met. If you are thinking that being a designer
involves more business than artistry, you are right.

The Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), formerly known
as FIDER, oversees programs at colleges and universities and certifies
that certain principles and practices are taught. A bachelor's degree
from a CIDA school is highly recommended and is the minimum for doing
commercial work. Masters and doctorate degrees are offered at many
universities. Some of the classes you can expect to take are computer
aided drafting, business/marketing, art, drawing, and art, furniture
and antique history. You can also expect to spend many hours on
design projects.

It is imperative that designers understand not only aesthetics, but
also the safety aspects of interiors. Because of this, interior
designers are now licensed professionals, much like architects and
nurses. The National Council for Interior Design Qualification offers
an examination to certify interior designers who have met the minimum
standards for professional practice. This exam is the standard to
measure the competency of designers.
Before you can take the NCIDQ exam and earn your license to practice,
you must have at least six years of working experience, two years of
schooling plus four years of work experience or four years in a CIDA
college or university plus two years of work experience. You cannot
advertise or represent yourself as a registered interior designer
unless you meet the minimum education, experience and examination
requirements established in your state/province, and apply for use of
the state-regulated title with the proper state board.
There are many career paths to take within the realm of interior
design. There are residential and commercial design jobs. Within
commercial business, you could specialize in schools, hospitals,
banks, malls, hotels or restaurants. In larger commercial projects,
your job could be project manager, draftsperson or specifier of
products. Some professionals go on to be sales representatives for
interior products, business owners of design firms, drapery
manufacturers or even specialized installers. There are many
possibilities for advancement. As our economy grows, so will the need
for qualified designers. As people become busier with their personal
and professional lives, they have less time to think about decorating
and creating environments that reflect themselves. As long as there
are homes and businesses, there will be a need for interior designers.

Tips For Sucessful Bedroom Interior Design Projects

Tips For Sucessful Bedroom Interior Design Projects

Did you know that bedroom home improvement projects are the most
frequently attempted projects for homeowners? As this is the room you
spend almost half your life in, this is understandable - even if the
majority of the time you spend there will be with your eyes closed!

You may wake up and decide you don't like the color, or you don't like
the furnishings, or that you want things situated in a different way.
No matter what you pick, you need to figure out what you want to
change and take it from there.

Now you might want to work on a budget. It doesn't have to be
excessive, you can simply paint and rearrange furniture for a new
look. One big complaint in the bedroom is the lack of storage space.
Several innovative solutions - such as cabinets that can hang in a
closet, stackable wooden storage crates with doors that face out, and
shelving units can help with that, as can simply arranging the
furniture to clear more floor space in the walk way areas - it doesn't
matter how much space is in your closet if it's inconvenient to get
to.

Take the time to plan out a layout for furniture and other elements in
your bedroom interior design plan. Think about where things go, and
what has to go next to what for usability - then look at sightlines
and the visual focus of the room. You don't have to decorate your
bedroom in keeping with the rest of your home - this is your private
space and you can give it the charming theme that suits you.

Next, pick out color schemes and patterns. Lighter colors will make
the room seem more spacious and airy, but darker colors can be nice
and even in small rooms will make the walls recede giving it the
allusion of space! Your lighting fixture are important and you want
to be sure there is enought light for reading or what have you. You
want to be sure you have matching colors in the carpet, bedding and
window treatments to pull the room together.

Decide which pieces of furniture and accessories you want to replace -
in particular, think about artwork, floor lamps and reading lights.
Consider colors and themes that go with the rooms overall design, try
to buy pieces that are practical, such as a cedar chest for the foot
of the bed, or headboards with shelves on them for lamps, alarm clocks
or books. If you want a TV in the room, you will have to plan it so
that it is situated in an area that is comfortable for viewing from
the bed - putting the TV remote on a tether tied to the head board can
also be useful.

Planning out your bedroom interior design beforehand is a great way
to ensure you accomplish a room that is perfect for you as well as
make your project go smoothly!

Organize your child's room

Organize your child's room

Children need a quiet place to calm themselves down at the end of a
busy day. Organize your child's room and then encourage them to help
you keep it that way. If there is less clutter for distraction, you
will find that it is easier to get them to settle down during bedtime
- or anytime they need a break.

Make sure you get your kids in on the action when you organize their
bedroom. Have them help you so that they understand how you expect
their room to look. This way, when you assign them chores in order to
keep their bedrooms clean, they will know exactly what to do.

Organize your dining room

Organize your dining room

If you use your dining room on a more casual, daily basis, it can get
cluttered fairly easily.

Your kids might do their homework at the table and leave their books
and papers spread out. You may use the table to read the newspaper and
then stash it in a pile in the corner when you are done.

Any flat surface is a prime suspect for gathering clutter, so the
focus of organizing the casual dining room is going to be on the
dining room table.

Determine the ways in which you use your dining room table and then
establish some rules to keep it clean.

If your kids use the table for homework, make a rule that all books
and papers must be returned to their book bags when they are done.

If you use the dining room table for reading the newspaper, keep a
newspaper basket in the dining room to place the papers in when you
are done. When the basket gets full recycle the newspapers.

If you use your table for paying bills or doing paper work, keep the
necessary papers in a tray that can easily be stored away in a nearby
drawer when you are done.

Creating simple solutions to keeping your dining room free from
clutter will make it a more enjoyable room to be in.

Be sure to keep your casual dining room clean too. Follow the steps
above for a thorough cleaning at least once per week.

No matter how you use it, free your dining room from clutter, keep it
clean and organized and enjoy using it for its intended purpose - to
enjoy wonderful meals with your family.

Organize your living room

Organize your living room

The first step to organizing any room is to remove the clutter.

Remove anything that belongs in another room in the house. Put those
items where they belong.

Dispose of any trash or recycling.

Helpful Tip: If you have a pile of magazines that you were saving for
a few interesting articles, tear out the pages containing the articles
you want and dispose of the rest.
Remove any unwanted or unnecessary items. Move all of these items to
Clutter Central.

The important thing to remember when decluttering your living room is
that you can only keep as much stuff as you have room to store. If
your media cabinet holds 100 movies, you can only keep 100 movies. If
you own more than that, you will need to either purge your collection
or get adequate storage.

Organize Your Living Room
The Clean Sweep
Now that you have all of the clutter removed, give your living room a
thorough cleaning.

Take window curtains down and throw them in the dryer to remove dust.

Wash the windows and blinds.

Vacuum, including using the crevice attachment to get into the corners
and along the walls, use the extension attachment to clear dust and
cobwebs from the ceiling and move furniture to vacuum underneath.

Vacuum the furniture itself - remove the cushions and vacuum any
crumbs that have accumulated and vacuum the upholstery using the
proper attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

If your carpet and upholstery are extremely dirty, consider calling a
professional company to come and clean them. You should have this done
at least once per year.

If you have wood floors, wash them thoroughly.

Dust all surfaces and knick knacks.

Wash the overhead light fixture and ceiling fan blades.

Organize Your Living Room
Identify and Fix Hot Spots
Do you have hot spots in your living room? Hot spots are areas which
tend to attract clutter like magnets and every home has them.

If you have children who tend to bring their toys into the living
room, you'll need a way to contain the toys.

Do your family members tend to walk in the door and fling off their
shoes into a big pile? If so, consider getting a bench that opens for
storage or an enclosed shoe rack to hid the pile of shoes.

Do you lose your coffee table under piles of mail, newspapers and
magazines? If so, place a decorative magazine rack next to your
favorite sofa or chair and place a basket or wall-mounted organizer
near the entry door for mail and keys.

Part of a good overall organization plan is to identify the areas in
your home or the habits of your family that tend to result in clutter
and find solutions for them.

Organize Your Living Room
Simple Maintenance
Now that you have taken the time to declutter, organize and thoroughly
clean your living room, let's talk about what you can do to keep it
that way. Here are some rules to follow:

Stay on top of those hot spots. Those are the areas most likely to
disorganize your freshly organized room.

Take 5 to 10 minutes each night before bed to do a quick pick up of
the living room. If you have kids, enlist their help as part of their
bedtime routine.

Fluff couch pillow and refold throw blankets.

Vacuum or wash the floor and dust thoroughly at least once each week.

Spot clean the carpet and upholstery as necessary. Have them
professionally cleaned at least once per year.

Enjoy your fresh clean living room!

How to Organize a Bathroom

How to Organize a Bathroom

The first step toward achieving an organized bathroom is to remove the
clutter. This includes checking the medicine cabinet, linen closet,
vanity cabinet and drawers and any other storage spaces you have in
your bathroom. Here is what you need to do:

Remove any items that do not belong in your bathroom. Put these items
in the room where they belong.

If you have any unwanted or unused items in your bathroom, move these
items to Clutter Central.

Dispose of expired medications. Contact your local pharmacy to find
out how to properly dispose of the specific medications you have.

Dispose of old, unused or no longer wanted person items such as
perfumes, make-up, moisturizers, etc.

How to Organize a Bathroom

The Clean Sweep

Now that you have purged your bathroom of clutter, it is time to give
it a thorough cleaning. The easiest way to set for the stage for your
clean sweep is to temporarily remove everything from your bathroom,
including inside the medicine cabinet, linen closet and vanity
cabinets and drawers.

Wash the inside of medicine cabinets, vanity cabinets, drawers and
closets.

Scrub the toilet bowl, the outside of the toilet, sink, counter, and
shower/tub.

Wash the shower curtain or clean glass tub doors. If you use a shower
curtain liner, clean or replace it.

Scrub the tile on the walls inside the shower/tub stall and don't
forget to clean the shower head and faucet.

Place window curtains in the dryer to remove dust.

Wash towels and bath mat.

Wash the floor.

How to Organize Your Bathroom

When you are finished cleaning, it's time to bring back the items you
removed. Be sure that you keep organization in mind when you are
deciding where to put the items you keep in your bathroom. Use these
guidelines.

The Medicine Cabinet

Since a medicine cabinet is typically limited in space, but very easy
to get to, it should be reserved for items that are used very
frequently.

The Vanity

Hairbrushes, curling irons and blow dryers fit nicely into most vanity
drawers. Since these drawers are also easily accessible you should use
them to store items that you use frequently.

Vanity cabinets are perfect for larger items such as extra towels and
toiletries such as extra shampoo bottles or to keep your wastebasket
out of sight. Place less frequently used items toward the back of the
cabinet and more frequently used items in front.

The Linen Closet

If you are fortunate enough to have a linen closet in or near your
bathroom, storage should never be an issue. Everything you need can be
stored in a linen closet and it can all be easily accessible if you
take the time to organize it.

Fold towels neatly on one shelf. Place supplies such as extra toilet
paper and facial tissues on another. Use plastic totes to contain
medicines, make-up and cleansers. Place more frequently used items in
front and lesser used items in back.

Keep Your Bathrooms Well Stocked

Keep each bathroom filled with the items required for that bathroom's
use. Half baths may only require a supply of toilet tissue, facial
tissue and hand soap, while a full bath will also require shampoo,
conditioner, bath towels, washcloths and other toiletries used in your
daily routine.

It is much easier to replace used supplies with fresh ones if the
supplies are right there in the room and easy to grab. So as you are
organizing each bathroom, be sure to find an appropriate home for the
necessary supply stock.

Now that you have learned how to organize a bathroom, it will be much
easier and less time-consuming to keep them clean.

Tips For Organizing Your Home

Tips For Organizing Your Home

Organizing your home in a hurry is not the simplest thing in the
world, especially if you happen to be a "clutter-bug" or a packrat.
However, doing so can massively sky-rocket your productiveness in all
areas of life, so it truly is worth doing. Here are some tips for a
quick decluttering:

- Go around the house and look for not-so-obvious and obvious GARBAGE!
Throw out doubles of things, and also boxes or packaging that you
think that you will need IF you move "someday". Be tough on yourself
and get rid of damaged things that you've been holding onto for
"sentimental reasons". You will not miss them.

- Search through the bathroom and pack at LEAST a shoebox with
hair-products, medications, make-up, and lotions that are past expiry
date and toss them into the garbage.

- Fill up a box with things for a charitable organization, and then
drop it off before you change your mind!

- Pack up your surplus of photo frames for an emergency decluttering
of your shelves and table-tops.. Even if you want to bring them out
again after your guests leave, it will present a much less cluttered
look to your rooms.

- Recycle your old catalogue pile. Now-a-days, almost everything is
available on-line.

- Take everything off of the floor in one room, wash it, after which
you only replace the items that really belong there.

- Make use of decorative bins. These can be found all over the place
these days and are very useful as they look both nice-looking and
uncluttered where-ever you place them, plus they are able to conceal
numerous miscelaneous "stuff".

- If you are sorely lacking cupboard space, pick up a pantry cupboard
with doors and put it along a spare wall. These make great closets,
and you can fit (or hide) a LOT of items on its shelves. Close the
doors and you will be pleasantly surprised at how much you
decluttered!

Sometimes, for whatever reason, you really need to get your house
organized in a hurry... do emergency decluttering. Whether for
emotional factors such as your mother coming to visit tomorrow, or
because you're all of a sudden COMPLETELY SICK OF being
self-conscious about your cluttered home, these emergency decluttering
tips can help you clear the clutter for good... or at the very least
conceal it nicely away for a quick fix!

Friendly Deodorizers

*S*cented sprays and candles usually only cover stinky smells—and
some don't even do a good job at that. Next time a nasty odor is
lurking inside your house, why not try an eco-friendly solution that
combats it at the source? Below, Mark Sneller, PhD, author of Greener
Cleaner Indoor Air, recommends four simple and environmentally-safe
ways to keep your home smelling fresh.

*1. Baking Soda*
Mix it with water to create a paste to wash walls or other surfaces
that smell, or leave an open box in enclosed spaces that are odorous,
such as the bottom of the laundry bin or garbage can.

*2. Borax*
Just as useful as baking soda, but more concentrated. Dump 2 teaspoons
in the garbage disposal, wipe down smelly surfaces with a mix of 1⁄2
teaspoon of borax and a cup of warm water, or spray the mixture on
plants to kill bugs and mold (and not the plant).

*3. Vinegar*
White vinegar and water, mixed in equal parts, sanitizes. And that
vinegar smell disappears as soon as it dries. Try the mixture in
coffeemakers, as well as on any non-stone surface around the house.

http://homeorganizationtips.info/wp-content/blogs.dir/18/files/HLIC/e778e6222f831807af19167440ab628e.jpg

*4. The Vacuum*
Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Really. It removes an array of particulates,
which prevents all sorts of future smelly growth. HEPA vacuum filters
are ideal because they capture and remove many more particulates, but
even a regular vacuum will help substantially.
